Whitehaven Ladies FC were formed for the start of the 2007 / 2008 season and take part in the Lancashire County League.
Initially about a dozen girls came to pre-season training and once the season was up and running numbers quickly grew, we now have a first team squad of 24 players signed on and if the growth continues, it is our intention to support the proposal to form a Cumbria County League for the 2008 / 2009 and field two teams, the first team will play in the Lancashire League and the reserves will play in the Cumbria League.
The team is drawn from a huge catchment area and we have girls travelling from as far as Carlisle in the north, Penrith to the east and Millom from the south, it is the policy of the football club to promote Ladies football as much as we can and it is the intention of the coaching staff to be successful and take the team as far as we can go.
The Ladies are coached by David Moore and Geoff Nicholson, two experienced and successful FA LEVEL 2 coaches and as the playing staff increases we also intend to increase the coaching staff.
The first season in the Lancashire league has been a success despite naivity costing us points in several games but that will all change as the side gains the neccessary experience to turn draws into victories, 0-0 and 1-1 draws with Accrington Stanley, a 1-1 draw with Lancaster City and a 2-2 draw with Carleton Rovers were all games that should have yielded three points, not knowing how to close out a game or to press home your advantage when on top or how to dig in when under pressure are things that will come as the team grows and plays together more and next season i fully expect this team to be challenging at the top of the league.
