Semi-Final win for Whitehaven

Posted: February 10, 2008, 1:09 am

Whitehaven got to the final of the Shipowners Cup for the second year running as they beat Cleadon 3-0 at the County Ground.  After a nervy start where the visitors had most of the possession in the opening minutes, Whitehaven dominated the first half, but only had two goals to show for their efforts.  A superb cross ball from Mally Holliday found Craig Robson in space on the left.  His run into the penalty box and cross to the far post found David Dustin who finished crisply to put his side 1-0 up.  Mike Farrer then rattled the crossbar from a tight angle, before trying to set up Stephen Hewitt when he was probably better placed to finish a flowing move involving several players.  Hewitt then added a second after a Carl McGrady thunderbolt crashed against the bar and landed at his feet, and at this point is was all Whitehaven.  Finbar Lynch then had Cleadons best chance of the afternoon just before the break, but Jack Fryer did well to turn his shot round the post and the chance was gone.

The second half saw Whitehaven continue their dominance in the early exchanges, but the game seemed to drifting to its conclusion before Darren Donald took to the field.  His tantalising runs invited rough treatment, and on 69 minutes he was felled from behind as he was about to score, and from the resultant penalty Wayne Collins ensured there was no way back for the visitors.
